We all want good health and we all want to be safe, now add that little word “and” and it takes on a whole new implication which conjures up images of overbearing jobsworths stopping people from doing activities that they have done without accident or incident for years – like playing conkers.
How much does an accident cost?
Or to put it another way how does an accident or near miss (a “Dangerous occurrence”) cost?
When does an accident or dangerous occurrence start to cost you or your business money?
Very often an accident starts to cost your business in a variety of ways long before it happens. If there have been near misses people will be wary of performing the activity that might hurt them. Which can cost you and your business money and could affect the financial safety of your company.
In most cases the people affected are your staff and so you will have to spend more time managing them and their concerns – more cost to your company.
The safety of your company extends way beyond the obvious. If your actions or omissions, or indeed those of your employees cause injury or ill health to someone, even one of those very same employees, it could cost you personally in a variety of ways. The most apparent are criminal prosecution for actually breaking the law or the one that most people are either scared of or take advantage of – compensation claims. In many cases of an accident both will apply.
If you do not have the correct documents and procedures in place and being used in your business, you could be personally liable for fines and compensation which have to be paid. The person responsible for safety and the most senior person in the organisation are people who are personally liable. Yes they have to pay the penalty; the fines, compensation or imprisonment.
